I like testing hardware that isn't on every desk. After five days with the Vivo X300 Ultra, here's my take: this thing is fun — with one clear caveat.
The camera: the star of the show
The main reason to buy this phone is the camera. And it delivers. The photos are outstanding — sharpness, dynamic range, colour reproduction: all at a level you'd expect from the big Western flagships. The Zeiss branding on the camera module isn't just marketing fluff here; the optics genuinely make a difference.
Portraits and low-light shots in particular show what the X300 Ultra is capable of. The image processing is mature — no over-the-top smoothing or artificial over-sharpening. The photos look real.
The price: top-heaviness
Now the caveat: The camera module is huge. And heavy. The phone is noticeably top-heavy — holding it in one hand, it pulls forward. That's the price you pay for the hardware packed in here, and it's a fair trade-off. But you feel it, especially typing one-handed or reading in bed.
If you shoot a lot of photos and mostly hold your phone with both hands anyway, this is a non-issue. If you want a light, balanced device, try the X300 Ultra in your hand before buying.
Android & software: a pleasant surprise
Another thing that positively surprised me: the Android version. Vivo uses FunTouch OS, and it has come a long way in recent versions. No overloaded bloatware experience, no questionable Chinese apps you can't uninstall — the UI is clean, fast, and pleasant to use.
Android security updates arrived on time on my unit, which isn't a given for a China phone.
Verdict after five days
For a China phone, the Vivo X300 Ultra is genuinely impressive. The camera is the clear reason to buy, the software experience is better than expected, and the top-heaviness is the only real criticism — and that's the hardware trade-off that makes the photos possible in the first place.
If you want a camera flagship and can live with the weight distribution: strong recommendation.
Is the Vivo X300 Ultra worth it for daily use?+
If camera quality matters to you: absolutely. The photos are at a level you wouldn't necessarily expect from a China phone. The trade-off is top-heaviness — the chunky camera module makes the device noticeably unbalanced. If you type one-handed a lot, you will feel it. For everyone else: strong device.
How good is the Android version?+
Surprisingly good. No bloated bloatware experience, the UI is clean and responsive. FunTouch OS (Vivo's Android skin) has come a long way in recent years — it no longer feels like a cheap Chinese UI.
