We’re buying this phone tomorrow. That’s the most honest context for this post: It’s a purchasing decision, not a review. What’s written here is based on manufacturer specifications, price comparisons, and published reviews—not on our own measurements. A hands-on report will follow once the device has been in use for a few weeks.

The Starting Point

The question wasn’t “which phone is the best,” but a more specific one: Which device is most likely to replace the point-and-shoot camera that nobody carries around anymore anyway? Anyone who documents operations—server rooms, cabling, damage, construction progress—rarely takes planned photos. You just take pictures of whatever’s there, using whatever’s in your pocket.

This shifts the priorities. All candidates have had more than enough processing power for years. What’s interesting are focal lengths, image stabilization, and battery life.

The Candidates

Four devices were up for consideration:

  • vivo X300 Ultra — 1,999 euros list price (16 GB / 1 TB), Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, three ZEISS lenses ranging from 14 to 85 millimeters, 200-MP main sensor (Sony Lytia 901), 200-MP telephoto lens from Samsung, gimbal stabilization per CIPA 7.0. Optional 400-mm teleconverter.
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max — starting at $1,199, 48-MP Fusion system with three cameras. Consistently regarded as the benchmark for video in comparisons.
  • Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra — starting at $1,299, four cameras: 200 MP main sensor with f/1.4, 50 MP ultra-wide-angle, 10 MP 3x telephoto, and a 50 MP 5x periscope lens with the new ALoP mechanism, plus 60-watt charging.
  • Google Pixel 10 Pro — the most affordable in the field, most powerful computational photography, 42-MP selfie camera.

A note on pricing: For the iPhone, Galaxy, and Pixel, reliable euro list prices for Austria aren’t available from the same source as the dollar figures, so dollar amounts are listed here. The euro price for the vivo, however, is official.

What Really Makes the Difference

Focal length over megapixels. The practical difference doesn’t lie in sensor resolution—200 MP sounds impressive, but in everyday use, the combined resolution amounts to only a fraction of that anyway. It lies in what you can actually achieve without sacrificing quality. A continuous optical range of 14 to 85 millimeters, plus an optional 400 millimeters, is in a different category than “wide-angle, normal, 5x.” For documentation from a distance—a nameplate on a pole, a detail on a building facade—that’s exactly what matters.

Stabilization. Gimbal stabilization compliant with CIPA 7.0 across all focal lengths is the second key point. The longer the focal length, the more severely camera shake affects the image; a 400-mm attachment without proper stabilization would be useless when shooting handheld.

Battery Life. The information sources are inconsistent here, and we can’t resolve this: The battery capacity is listed as 6,600 mAh and elsewhere as 7,000 mAh. What is undisputed is 100 watts for wired charging and 40 watts for wireless charging. Both exceed what the iPhone and Pixel offer; the Galaxy charges at 60 watts.

Software Support. This used to be the deal-breaker against Chinese flagships, but it isn’t anymore: five major Android versions plus two years of security patches, totaling seven years. In addition, OriginOS 6 is replacing the previously much weaker FuntouchOS internationally—eliminating the two-tier system between software for the Chinese and global markets.

What You Give Up

Being honest means acknowledging the downsides.

Ecosystem. If you use a Mac, iPad, and Watch, switching means losing Handoff, AirDrop, and the continuity of messages and calls. This isn’t a minor detail—it’s the real cost. In our case, this carries less weight because the rest of our work environment isn’t Apple-centric anyway—but if you’re currently looking for a 5K display for the Mac, you should take this point very seriously.

Video. In comparisons, the iPhone consistently leads in video recording. Those who primarily shoot video still buy Apple.

Resale Value. An iPhone is still worth something after three years. For a vivo flagship in Europe, the secondary market is thin—realistically, you should consider the purchase price as a total loss.

Update History. The seven-year promise is new. Samsung and Google have now shown that they deliver; vivo still has to prove it.

Our Decision

We’re buying the X300 Ultra—because of the focal length range and image stabilization, not because of the megapixels. For the use case where the alternative isn’t a “better camera” but “no camera at all,” the optical range is the only factor that really matters in everyday life.

We’re not ordering the 400-mm teleconverter just yet. The bundle costs around 2,300 euros, and it’s impossible to say with any certainty whether the attachment will actually get used or end up in a drawer after two weeks. We can always buy it later.

The question remains as to how well OriginOS 6 integrates into an environment otherwise not dominated by vivo, and how reliable the update promise is in practice. That’s exactly what the hands-on review will cover.

Is the vivo X300 Ultra officially available in Austria?+

Yes. vivo has shipped the X300 Ultra outside of China for the first time—Austria, Germany, and Hungary are among the launch markets. Pre-orders began on April 16, 2026, and the device has been available in stores since April 24, 2026. Only one model is offered, with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage, at a list price of 1,999 euros; according to price comparisons, the street price is lower than that. So this is not an import with a gray-market warranty, but rather a product distributed through official channels.

Does a vivo get updates for as long as an iPhone or Pixel?+

Nowadays, yes—at least on paper. For the X300 series, vivo promises five major Android version updates plus two additional years of security patches—a total of seven years. This puts vivo on par with Samsung and Google. Two caveats remain: In recent years, patches have been released quarterly rather than monthly, and an update promise is a statement of intent, not a contractual commitment. Anyone relying on this should know that vivo has only recently adopted this policy—naturally, there isn’t yet a track record of fulfilled promises spanning seven years.

Can a phone like this replace a real camera?+

For everyday use and documentation, increasingly yes; for demanding work, no. The focal length range of 14 to 85 millimeters covers what would otherwise require carrying two or three lenses, and with the optional 400-mm teleconverter, it adds a reach that would otherwise require a very expensive telephoto lens. What a phone still can’t provide is the sensor size of a full-frame camera, true depth-of-field control without computational tricks, and operation via a viewfinder and control dials. Our expectation: The large camera remains for planned shots, while the phone handles everything that otherwise wouldn’t be photographed at all.
