iPhone Duo claim check: a quarter lighter and waterproof?

A review channel published a video on the iPhone Duo that names concrete numbers and a hard verdict. According to the video, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a quarter lighter, countless tests showed sand entering the hinge and destroying the display, and the software is unfinished. On 5 November 2026 we held the numbers against Apple's technical specifications, Samsung's product page, the 9to5Mac review and the ComputerBase report. The direction of the verdict is defensible, three numbers do not survive the check.

What a claim check is: A claim check tests a specific statement from a review, video or article against the primary source it relies on: the manufacturer's spec sheet, the standard, or the original of a measurement. Each claim ends up as confirmed, deviating or unverifiable. Opinions and matters of taste are not scored, because no source exists to compare them with.

Basis of this post: One video, no measurement of the device ourselves. It is Die harte Wahrheit: iPhone Duo review! by the channel iKnowReview. We paraphrase what the video says and mark it "according to the video". No transcript is available, so we give no timestamps.

Test bed: document comparison without a measurement of our own, status 5 November 2026. Units as in the sources: grams, millimetres, nits, euros.

Weight: 21 percent is not a quarter

According to Apple the Duo weighs 254 grams, open and closed. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is 5 grams lighter according to 9to5Mac, so 249 grams. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs 201 grams according to Samsung, which markets it as the world's lightest book-style foldable. The gap is 53 grams, or 20.9 percent of the Duo's weight. "A quarter" overshoots by roughly four percentage points. The point behind it holds anyway: the Duo is the heavier device.

On dimensions, Apple lists 5.2 mm open and 11.3 mm closed. According to 9to5Mac the open Duo is thinner than the iPhone Air (5.64 mm), while closed it is about 29 percent thicker than the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. We did not cross-check the comparison with every other current iPhone.

Waterproof yes, sand-proof unclear

The statement carrying the most weight in the video: the Duo lacks a real IP68 certification, and countless tests showed sand getting into the hinge and destroying the display. Three things sit on top of each other here, and they are evidenced to different degrees.

The rating. Apple lists IP68 under IEC 60529, lab-tested to 6 metres for 30 minutes. "No real IP68" contradicts the spec sheet. We did not repeat the test ourselves.

The caveat. Apple adds that the resistance is not permanent and can decrease with normal wear. The rating describes a new device, not one after weeks in a pocket.

The evidence. On 25 October 2026 ComputerBase reported a JerryRigEverything test: after a handful of dirt, sand and particles collected in the hinge and kept it from closing fully. ComputerBase also relays reports of broken inner displays at the hinge ("Crackgate"), which MacRumors picked up. ComputerBase classes them as isolated cases so far and considers user error possible. One test and a few reports are not countless tests. That it never happens on other foldables is a claim without a measurement.

For a buying decision the practical part remains: a foldable with a hinge gap does not belong on the beach, and a repair quickly costs most of a second device.

Source: Apple's price list as reproduced by ComputerBase on 25 October 2026. The table is an excerpt; the back glass (219 and 29 euros) is left out. Apple has no hinge line item either: according to ComputerBase the hinge is not repaired and the whole device would be swapped, which would "probably" cost 1,719 euros. AppleCare+ costs 20.99 euros a month according to ComputerBase. Over two years that is 503.76 euros, less than half of one inner display repair at full price.

Display: 1300 nits are not in the spec sheet

The video names 1300 nits for the outer display. In its spec sheet Apple lists 1000 nits typical maximum brightness, 1600 nits HDR peak and 3000 nits outdoor peak. We find no 1300 nits figure there. Apple does confirm the 460 pixels per inch of the 5.4-inch outer display.

Judgements on the outer display format, the speakers and day-to-day battery life are experience reports from the video. We neither measured nor checked them, and we do not present them as fact.

What this comparison does not cover

We did not check the video's statements on software, charging times and temperatures, or the number of foldables the channel has tested. If a purchase depends on one of these numbers, listen to it in the video itself.

Price, the Austrian market and the missing Siri AI in the EU are covered in our post iPhone Duo vs Fold 8: prices, market launch and missing AI. More vendor-news assessments are collected under the topic AI explained: models, market, news. If a hardware number carries a procurement decision for you, we are happy to check it against the primary source: how we work with clients.

Updated on 5 November 2026: all figures re-checked against Apple, Samsung US, 9to5Mac and ComputerBase; unverifiable statements removed or marked "according to the video".

Questions?
Is the iPhone Duo dust tight?+

Apple lists IP68 under IEC 60529, tested in the lab to 6 metres for 30 minutes. Apple also writes that the resistance is not permanent and can decrease with normal wear. One documented failure is a JerryRigEverything test in which sand kept the hinge from closing fully, as reported by ComputerBase on 25 October 2026. There is no test series yet.

Which number from the video held up best?+

The weight and dimension figures. Apple lists 254 grams, 5.2 mm open and 11.3 mm closed. The 9to5Mac review also says it weighs 5 grams more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The claimed quarter-lighter Fold 8 works out to 21 percent.

Is waiting for the second generation worth it?+

That is a trade-off, not a measurement. Consider the repair prices: the inner display costs 1,149 euros without AppleCare+ according to ComputerBase, and Apple's price list has no line item for the hinge. If you use the phone daily around sand and pockets, you carry that risk yourself.
